The Florida State Seminoles fired Michael Alford as athletic director on Monday. After the University made its final decision to switch things up for its future in sports, rumors began swirling around Mike Norvell's job security as the head coach of the football program. The rumors have already gotten to the point that there is now some buzz that Jimbo Fisher could reprise his role as the Seminoles' head coach if Norvell were to be let go.

While that may be the case, Florida State President Richard McCullough didn't provide much details about Norvell's position. When asked firing the athletic director means for the 44-year-old head coach's future with the program, McCullough claimed that FSU is simply focused on winning, according to Adam Rittenberg of ESPN.

“Nobody wants to win more than Mike Norvell,” McCullough said. “College coaches are in the winning business. That's what we're working on.”

But winning hasn't been consistent at Florida State so far in the Mike Norvell era. Since hiring Norvell in 2020, the Seminoles own a 39-35 win-loss record (including this season's first two games). If winning is the goal, which it is for every single sports program, then it feels like the veteran head coach needs to turn things around quickly in Tallahassee.

And that's where the Jimbo Fisher rumors enter the chat. T_Lang, a staff member and Ultimate Seminole Insider on Warchant.com (an affiliate of On3 Sports), went over the possibility of Fisher reuniting with Florida State. The insider claims that the 60-year-old is highly interested in the head coaching job. However, he does state that the program has shown no signs in sharing a mutual interest.

“Is Jimbo Fisher interested in the FSU job if it comes open? Absolutely,” the insider wrote. “Over the past few months and recently as this week, I've been told that Jimbo has expressed interest through the following channels: Broadcast media brethren, FSU alumni/those with connections to the powers at Florida State, [and] former players. Fisher is actively working to learn as much as possible about operations at FSU in 2026 so he can make the best play possible for the job, if it comes open. Finances, influential figures etc…

“OK, so is Florida State interested? There have been no indications from those familiar with FSU's thinking that Fisher would be a top candidate if the head coaching job opens up,” the insider continued. “Though it could change over the coming weeks/months, right now it seems a long way off.”

While the rumors will continue floating around Florida State, Mike Norvell will focus on getting his team prepared for a big Week 3 matchup. The Seminoles are scheduled to take on the No. 10 Alabama Crimson Tide on the road on Saturday, September 19.
