Seahawks face major backfield attrition with two runners ruled out, though defensive reinforcements provide stability ahead of Week 4

For head coach Mike Macdonald and his group, Friday’s final practice report brought mixed results: while the defensive front and passing attack cleared the week in great shape, the running back room took two substantial hits that will reshape the offensive game plan on Sunday afternoon.

The primary concern for Seattle centers squarely on the backfield, where two rotational ball-carriers have officially been ruled out. Running back Zach Charbonnet will miss Sunday’s contest due to a knee issue. Charbonnet did not appear on Wednesday’s initial sheet before logging limited sessions on both Thursday and Friday. Despite returning to practice in a partial capacity, the medical staff opted to hold him out.

Adding to Seattle’s backfield trouble, rookie rusher Jadarian Price has also been ruled out with a chest injury. Price managed a limited practice on Wednesday, but his condition worsened as the week progressed, leading to consecutive non-participation days on Thursday and Friday and landing him on IR which sidelines him for the next four weeks.

With Charbonnet and Price unavailable, reserve running back George Holani becomes an essential piece behind the starting unit. Holani managed a rib ailment all week and was limited on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but he avoided a game designation and is fully cleared to play.

Questionable designations test coverage depth

Beyond the running back absences, two Seahawks carry questionable tags heading into the weekend.

Safety Ty Okada is questionable due to a hamstring injury. Okada opened the week on the sidelines Wednesday before progressing to limited participation Thursday and a full workload on Friday. While his upward practice trend is a positive indicator, game-day warmups will ultimately determine whether he can dress.

Linebacker Chazz Surratt was added to the report late in the week with a calf issue, sitting out Wednesday and Thursday before logging a limited session Friday. His questionable designation leaves his special teams and defensive rotation role in doubt right up until 90 minutes before kickoff.

Defensive front and key weapons cleared without designations

Fortunately for Seattle, the remainder of the injury report brought reassuring news across several pivotal position groups.

Explosive wide receiver Rashid Shaheed practiced with zero restrictions all week despite being listed with a hip injury. Shaheed logged full participation on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, ensuring the Seahawks have their premier deep threat ready to stretch the field. Along the offensive interior, guard Grey Zabel shook off an early-week groin issue, progressing from limited work on Wednesday to full participation both Thursday and Friday to avoid a designation.

Defensive coordinator Aden Durde also has his defensive trenches fully intact. Veteran defensive tackle Leonard Williams was listed for non-injury rest after being limited Wednesday, but he returned to full participation Thursday and Friday.

Nose tackle Jarran Reed followed a similar arc, upgrading from a limited Wednesday session to full practice Thursday and Friday while working through a foot ailment. Fellow interior lineman Brandon Pili handled full practice reps all three days despite a neck concern.

In the secondary, safety Nick Emmanwori logged full practices Wednesday through Friday while managing an ankle issue, avoiding any designation. Veteran safety Julian Love also cleared protocol, ramping up from limited practice reps early in the week to a full session Friday despite a calf issue.

With Love and Emmanwori locked into the starting backend, Seattle’s defense possesses the continuity and physical presence necessary to navigate Sunday's matchup.
