As the Indiana Fever wait for Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and head coach Stephanie White to return after helping Team USA win the gold medal during the FIBA World Cup,  Sophie Cunningham spoke about the search for the next WNBA commissioner. While the Fever star in Cunningham has spoken about the open WNBA commissioner role before, she would reveal the talks she's had with Adam Silver about it.

Speaking to the media after Monday's practice, the 30-year-old would give insight into the conversations the two had and how the goal is to get “someone in place who really wants to take our league to another level,” via ESPN.

“I have talked to Adam Silver a couple times, and I think he's a great guy,” Cunningham said. “He was very knowledgeable and full of wisdom and so getting to talk to him and hear his perspective of how he approaches the NBA is huge, and who he's kind of looking for. But I think he's going to put someone in place who really wants to take our league to another level than it's already at.'

Cunningham would speak more on what the WNBA should want in a commissioner, emphasizing a “players-first” approach and the need for a “unifier” amidst polarizing opinions in the league.

One of those coming from Cunningham herself on her opinion on transgender athletes competing in women's and girls' sports, leading to further instances. It's led to former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White infiltrating WNBA games to send a message about the issue, though the league doesn't have a single transgender athlete.

“You need someone who's going to unite everybody because it can be so different. But that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. I think it makes it a lot of fun,” Cunningham said.

It remains to be seen who will be the next WNBA commissioner after Cathy Engelbert plans to retire by the end of this season, as Indiana's next game off the break is on Friday against the Toronto Tempo.
