The Atlanta Falcons are tinkering with their backfield depth as the 2026 regular season moves along. According to CBS Sports insider Matt Zenitz, the Falcons signed former Alabama Crimson Tide running back Jam Miller to their practice squad on Tuesday. To open up a spot on the practice unit for Miller, Atlanta released former Georgia Bulldogs running back Cash Jones.

The New England Patriots originally selected Miller in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft with the 245th overall pick. The rookie wasted no time making an impression during training camp in Foxborough, leading New England with 14 carries for 55 yards during their preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts. However, an undisclosed injury late in August led to his release via an injury settlement before the regular season kickoff. Now back at full health, Miller earned his spot after a successful workout with Atlanta in late September.

Before turning pro, Miller spent four productive seasons in Tuscaloosa, consistently delivering tough yards in the SEC. He enjoyed his breakout college campaign during the 2024 season, spearheading Alabama’s backfield by rushing for 668 yards and seven touchdowns on 145 carries. He also demonstrated soft hands out of the backfield, snagging 16 receptions for 155 yards and an additional touchdown in 13 games. Over his college tenure, the 5-foot-10, 209-pound rusher proved he could produce as both a downhill runner and a reliable pass protector.

This roster move provides strategic insurance for Atlanta as the grueling season continues. While the active roster features a formidable tandem in Bijan Robinson and Brian Robinson Jr., carrying quality developmental talent remains essential for long-term offensive stability. Miller brings legitimate SEC pedigree, solid pass-blocking traits, and kickoff return experience to Atlanta's secondary unit. If injuries strike or special teams help becomes necessary down the stretch, Miller stands ready to step up and make an immediate impact on game day whenever his number gets called.
