Not only did the Indianapolis Colts fire their general manager midseason, but they’ve also seen their big-contract quarterback fail to meet expectations. Adding to the pain, an expected Alec Pierce injury update put an extra damper on an already terrible week, according to a post on X by James Boyd.
“#Colts HC Shane Steichen says WR Alec Pierce, who is eligible to come off IR this week, will not practice. He's still rehabbing after aggravating his surgically repaired left heel last month. No surprise on that front. Pierce was in a walking boot yesterday in the press box.”
Pierce is another big-contract player who has been able to produce. In his case, he’s played in only two games with five catches for 72 yards.
Colts playing waiting game on WR Alec Pierce
With his four-year, $114-million contract on the books, Pierce has been a huge bust. Without him, the Colts have been as scary on offense. Jones has been ineffective on offense, only hitting on four touchdown passes with six interceptions.
Overall, Jones’ numbers have been very concerning after his return from last year’s Achilles injury. He ranks near the bottom of the league among starting quarterbacks in key statistical categories like QBR (30th), completion percentage (29th), and yards per attempt (29th).
All of these things mean problems for head coach Shane Steichen. His fortunes may still be tied to those of fired GM Chris Ballard, according to ESPN.
“We have been very clear with [Ballard] and [Steichen], but giving them another opportunity means that the sense of urgency for them to deliver and perform has never been higher,” Owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon said in January.
Article Continues BelowWho knows if the Colts are through making changes. They’re 2-4 and underperforming, at least in the eyes of Irsay-Gordon. The time had apparently come to make a drastic move.
“Making this change during the season was a deliberate decision,” she said. “Waiting would only delay the important work that needs to begin now.”
Time will tell if the Colts can get things turned around, but things look very sketchy at this point.
