Essex look over shoulder as draw turns eyes to Leicestershire's appeal

Glamorgan and Essex ended the 2026 Rothesay County Championship with an underwhelming draw as rain caused for an early abandonment on day four at Sophia Gardens.

Essex had fought back on day three and with just 21 balls possible after a two-and-a-half-hour delay, further rain caused for the umpires to call the match a draw with no more play possible.

George Bell (66) and Noah Thain (21 not out) came out firing, scoring 14 from the day's first over from Timm van der Gugten. A flicked six from Thain off Raymond Toole's first ball left the day took the score to 351 for 6, with Bell removed by van der Gugten with a low-keeping nip-backer. When play was called abandoned, Essex trailed by just 25 following on, in pursuit of Glamorgan's 505.

Essex sit eighth, 25 points clear of Leicestershire, but will nervously await the result of their relegation rivals' appeal against the pitch sanction which deducted them 27 points.

"We'll obviously keep an eye on [Leicestershire's appeal decision]," Chris Silverwood, Essex's director of cricket, said. "We don't want to go to the second division and we've got to hope that doesn't happen. We can only control what's in front of us so we'll just have to wait and see."

Glamorgan finish sixth in their first season back in Division One for over two decades. Two solid performances towards the back end of the season - here, and against Surrey last week - have kept them safe in a successful campaign.
