It's not all doom and gloom for the Philadelphia Eagles on the injury front. But there are still major concerns. And the Week 6 injury report for the Panthers game is telling. Jalen Hurts' injury has left the offense in flux.
Carrying a record of 2-3, the Eagles desperately need a win. They’ve lost three straight games since starting the year strong. And the last two have been extremely difficult late-game setbacks.
Somehow, they will have to cobble together an offensive game plan to give them a shot at holding off the Panthers at home.
One problem for the Eagles is bickering
It’s very hard to win football games when the head coach and quarterback aren’t meshing nicely. And after the loss to the Jaguars, Hurts butted heads with Sirianni, according to a post on X by PHLY Eagles via Heavy.com.
Hurts was asked why the Eagles didn’t drain more clock on its final possession.
“Ultimately, that’s not my place,” Hurts said. “I’m prepared as a quarterback to not worry about those things. I’m honoring the play call, honoring the things that are coming in the game.
“When I’m up at night, I think about: Should I have said something? Should I have took a step back and say wait? But ultimately, there’s a commitment to going out there and executing, so this was one where it didn’t work in our favor.”
Sirianni snapped back at his QB, according to a post on X by CBS Philadelphia.
“Jalen’s playing, we’re coaching and calling the plays, and Jalen’s got to go execute what we call in that moment, 100%,” Sirianni said. “And so, we’re not asking him to make play calls in that scenario. He’s already got enough to worry about to go out and execute. So, that’s where we were there in that situation.”
How do the Eagles replace QB Jalen Hurts?
Perhaps it’s temporarily, or maybe it’s indefinitely, that Hurts will be out. Sirianni, in all his brilliance, will have to craft a game plan that works with McKee.
With only two career starts, McKee doesn’t have a body of work that shows what he can do. He did have a nice game back in 2024 against the Giants. He led the Eagles to a 20-13 win by throwing for 269 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
And the good news is he gets his first start this season against a shaky Panthers’ defense. The good news is the Eagles players believe McKee is ready, according to NBC Sports.
“I think everybody’s got a lot of belief in Tanner,” tight end Dallas Goedert said. “When his number has been called upon, he has stepped in and done a good job for us. Obviously, you hate to lose Jalen like that, the leader of the offense. But it’s kind of what we’ve been dealing with all year. The next man has to step up.”
Left tackle Jordan Mailata added: “Love everything about him. His poise, his energy too. High energy guy. It’s not Jalen, where Jalen is cool, calm, and collected 24/7. I think Tanner has a very calm nature about him but is also high energy with the way he attacks practice.”
But what about the rest of the offense?
McKee could be fine and dandy in theory. But if Mailata, Drew Kendall, Tyler Steen, Willie Lampkin, and Markel Bell can’t give him time to operate, the Eagles won’t be able to move the football very effectively.
The Eagles got caught off guard by left tackle Lane Johnson’s retirement. But they made a calculated decision to send center Cam Jurgens to the Ravens. It’s all part of the overall process, according to Sports Illustrated.
“We're trying to win every year, and we're always trying to retool and get better, and again, it's hard to get first- and second-round picks,” General Manager Howie Roseman said. “They give you a lot of options. You can certainly use those on players and picks. You can trade up in drafts with those picks. (And) you can use them for players, and we've done all those things. And I think one of the things that it gives us is flexibility.”

“I think nothing has changed in terms of our goals and when we're trying to win this year,” Roseman said.
Can the Eagles make the playoffs with this offense?
It seems unlikely unless they can unlock a very complicated offensive puzzle. Even with Hurts, Barkley, and Smith available at times, the Eagles rank No. 30 in the NFL with 262.2 yards per game.
It’s hard to imagine the key can be found in the snaps with their backup quarterback. But the Eagles need to start their turnaround immediately. A fourth straight loss would send them into the game against the Cowboys facing what would almost be a season-defining contest.
Getting DeVonta Smith back on the field this week would be a big boost for the offense. McKee will need a true WR1 on which he can lean. However, Dontayvion Wicks is questionable. That means rookie Makai Lemon may need to step up to a bigger role.
Truth be told, the Eagles have far more questions than answers. The thin silver lining for Sirianni is the opportunity to prove himself as a better coach than some give him credit for being. If he can get the Eagles over the top against the Panthers and carry momentum into the showdown with the Cowboys, there’s still hope for the 2026 season.
