For the first time since November 1, 2009, the New York Giants (4-2-1) are favorites in Philadelphia (2-6). That is 17 years in the making, and the spread of Giants -3 is no mistake; the Eagles are trying to get out of the gutter. Philadelphia has lost six straight games, and only two of them have come by single-digit margins. The Eagles have a bye week following this NFC East clash, and I’m sure they feel it couldn’t come soon enough.

Tanner McKee will make his fourth consecutive start after leading the Eagles to 14, 21, and 10 points. The offense has been injury-riddled. DeVonta Smith sat out and Saquon Barkley hobbled to 30 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Makhi Lemon had another strong game with six catches for 57 yards, but there wasn’t much to brag about in the 27-10 loss. The Eagles jumped out to a 10-0 first-quarter lead, then allowed a 27-0 run. Philadelphia ranks 30th in points per game (17.1), last in yards per play (4.4), and 24th in third-down percentage (37.2%). No matter how good the defense is, the offense has shown they are incapable of going score for score without Jalen Hurts.

One could argue that the best thing to happen for the Giants’ season is J.J. McCarthy. The New York offense has scored 27 points in each of the last two games and could’ve been 2-0. However, the Giants lost to the Saints 34-27 and beat the Texans 27-21 in OT before the bye week.

New York has a rest advantage and likely a mental advantage over Philly. The Giants should be feeling good as they sit atop the NFC East, whereas the Eagles are at the bottom. As the first half of the season wraps up, the most surprising stat of the Giants might be that they rank eighth in total yards allowed at 313.0 per game. The New York defense will have its first shot of the season against a depleted Philadelphia offense, and coming off a bye week, it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Let’s dive into the numbers and see if we can’t find an additional sweat or two.

Expert picks & predictions for Eagles vs Giants

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) leans the Giants -3:

“Right now, I don’t know how anyone can back the Eagles. The offense is in disarray and no matter how good the defense is, Philadelphia squeezing 20 points out of Tanner McKee looks improbable. New York is a favorite in Philadelphia for the first time in 17 years and I agree that they should be. Anything less than 3.5, I like the Giants.”

Quarterback matchup for Eagles vs Giants

· New York: J.J. McCarthy – After throwing for 243 yards in the fourth quarter against the Saints (tying NYG’s record), J.J. McCarthy duked it out with the Texans in his first start. McCarthy completed 20 out of 28 passes for 252 yards in a 27-21 OT win. McCarthy has shown poise and the ability to play from behind in his two appearances. Following a bye week, we should expect McCarthy to settle in more and the playbook to expand for him.

· Philadelphia: Tanner McKee – Tanner McKee has thrown for at least 200 yards in all three starts, but was sacked a season-high five times and threw an interception in back-to-back games. McKee has thrown 45, 35, and 34 passes through three games as they’ve been in a trailing game state for probably 90% of his possessions. Whether he has been in a clean pocket or blitzed, McKee ranks 31st and 33rd in catchable ball rate, and 26th and 33rd in completion percentage. He could be dealing, and it probably won’t make a difference with all the injuries and random occurrences like Lane Johnson retiring.
