The NFC East is up for grabs and just because you’re at the bottom of the standings in Week 8 doesn’t mean you can’t win the division! That’s the mindset around the Washington Commanders (1-4-1) as they host the Philadelphia Eagles (2-5) on NBC and Peacock for Sunday Night Football.

Washington is coming off a bye week, which was likely spent planning how the Commanders can make a run in a wild division. The Commanders’ only win came against the defending Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks back in Week 3, which makes total sense (sarcasm detected). Washington is 0-4 and averaging 21.5 points per game in Jayden Daniels’ starts this season.

Over the last two games, the Commanders were down by six with a fourth-and-three on the 17-yard line and couldn’t convert to knock off the 49ers on Monday Night Football in Week 6. In Week 5, the Commanders had a bonehead ending in OT and tied with the Giants. Washington could have entered this game on a two-game winning streak and 3-1 over the last four, but Dan Quinn has had a lapse or two in coaching decisions.

Philadelphia has lost five straight games, and only two of those losses have come by one possession. The Eagles haven’t dropped six straight games since 2012, so we are living in unprecedented times. Tanner McKee will get another start at quarterback after posting 426 passing yards and two touchdowns to one interception. Saquon Barkley has another questionable tag with his hamstring injury after putting up seven carries for 62 yards and a touchdown against Dallas. The Eagles missed DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks last week, but Makai Lemon scored his first touchdown and had a career-high seven catches and 67 yards. The Eagles defense gave up a season-high 38 points and couldn’t stop the Cowboys’ rushing attack (38 carries, 204 yards, 1 TD). Philadelphia beat Washington 24-22 in Week 1 as Jayden Daniels failed to convert a two-point conversion with 1:01 remaining in the game. The Commanders covered, and the Over hit. Let’s see what happens this time!

Let’s dive into the numbers and see if we can’t find an additional sweat or two.

Expert picks & predictions for Eagles at Commanders

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) likes the Commanders to cover the -5.5:

“I was pretty surprised when I found out Washington is 11-3-1 on the ML as a favorite with Dan Quinn. That leads the NFL since 2024, and their 9-6-1 ATS mark is sixth-best in that span. The Commanders have been very profitable as a favorite since Quinn and Jayden Daniels took over, and they’ve been a poor underdog. The Eagles are in shambles, and new names are popping up on the injury report every week. I would not be shocked to see Washington rally and win the NFC East, although I’d put my money on the Cowboys for that. I like Washington to cover at home.”

Quarterback matchup for Cowboys at Eagles

· Washington: Jayden Daniels – In Jayden Daniels’ four starts this season, Washington is 0-4 and has averaged 21.5 points per game. Daniels has seven total touchdowns to zero interceptions through four games and almost 1,000 passing and rushing yards. Daniels has been his best under pressure. Daniels has a 63.0% completion percentage under pressure (4th-best) and 60.5% when blitzed (19th) compared to 63.7% in a clean pocket (26th). Daniels has been better against zone than man coverage, posting a 19% higher completion percentage (72.5 vs 53.2) and a 4.0-point difference in passer ratings (100.0 vs 96.0). Philly ranks in the middle of the NFL in how often they ran both man and zone coverage. Daniels is 1-3 against Philadelphia in his career and has a 9:4 TD-to-INT ratio (5-TD game in 2024).

· Philadelphia: Tanner McKee – Tanner McKee turned in another similar performance to his first start: 200 passing yards and a touchdown with a loss. There are injured Eagles all over the field, and most of the playmakers have been missing. McKee could be without Barkley, Smith, and Wicks this week on the road in primetime back-to-back weeks. Not a recipe for success under the bright lights. Through two games, McKee has a 40% play-action completion percentage (34th) and 68.1% true completion percentage (25th). With a clean pocket, McKee has a 63.5% completion percentage (26th) as his supporting cast ranks 24th in efficiency. It’ll be hard to succeed without a rhythm due to all the injuries.
