Nick Sirianni rarely shies away from aggression on fourth down. That made his decision Monday night all the more jarring. With the Philadelphia Eagles trailing the Chicago Bears 20-7 midway through the third quarter, Sirianni faced fourth-and-about 1 from the Chicago 49-yard line. He could have trusted Jalen Hurts and his offense. Instead, Philadelphia attempted to draw the Bears offside. They accepted a delay-of-game penalty when it failed and punted.
Sirianni later acknowledged he should have gone for it, saying, “As I look back at that, I probably should have went for it there. Didn’t like that decision.”
The decision stood out because of how unusual it was for Sirianni in that field position. That's especially true with Philadelphia needing a spark in a game that had quickly gotten away from the Eagles. Instead, the punt surrendered possession. It reflected the broader offensive struggles that produced only 248 total yards and one touchdown. Philadelphia ultimately fell 27-7. They committed three turnovers while failing to generate consistent momentum against Case Keenum and Chicago.
Sirianni accepted responsibility afterward. He called it a “true team loss” and saying he had to “look at myself first.”
For a team with championship aspirations, the fourth-down hesitation was really about an offense struggling to find answers when the game demanded them. The Eagles entered Week 3 at 2-0 after narrow victories over Washington and Tennessee. Their Monday night collapse exposed problems across the offense and defense. That turns next week’s matchup with the Rams into an important opportunity to respond.
