The Miami Dolphins claimed rookie running back Kaytron Allen off waivers from the Washington Commanders on Friday as the organization continues addressing its backfield following De'Von Achane's season-ending ACL injury.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the move Friday on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Allen's arrival comes after Achane suffered a torn ACL during Miami's 24-10 Week 3 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The star running back sustained the injury on an 11-yard run during Miami's opening possession. Although Achane initially walked off the field under his own power, further evaluations confirmed the season-ending injury.

Miami placed Achane on injured reserve Sept. 28, leaving the Dolphins without one of their most important offensive weapons for the remainder of the 2026 season.

Kaytron Allen joins Dolphins one day after Commanders release

Washington waived Allen on Thursday after selecting him with the No. 187 overall pick in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

The 23-year-old appeared in all four games for the Commanders, recording 41 rushing yards on 12 carries while contributing on special teams.

Washington's decision followed the return of veteran Austin Ekeler, who joined a backfield featuring Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Rachaad White.

Before entering the NFL, Allen spent four seasons at Penn State, totaling 4,180 rushing yards and 39 touchdowns. He earned second-team All-America honors in 2025 after rushing for 1,303 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Allen now joins a Miami backfield featuring Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon II as the Dolphins attempt to compensate for Achane's absence.

Miami (0-4) remains winless under first-year head coach Jeff Hafley and has struggled offensively with Malik Willis taking over as the starting quarterback.

The Dolphins will look to secure their first victory when they host the Cincinnati Bengals (2-2) on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on FOX.
