The Chicago Cubs brought in Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays to add to the pitching staff and help the Cubs make a run in the playoffs. In nine starts with the Cubs, the pitcher has a 4-2 record with a 4.83 ERA, pitching solidly for his new team. With his pitching and the way the rotation is lined up, speculation was that Gausman would get the game one start in the NL Wild Card Series against the San Diego Padres. Still, Gausman was injured in his last start, making a play in the field.

Now, more information on the status of the star pitcher is being provided, per MLB.com.

“Threw a bullpen session Sept. 27 at Tropicana Field that went well. Will be monitored into off-day Sept. 28 to gauge his availability for the Wild Card Series against the Padres,” the update on Gausman read.

The pitcher hurt his non-throwing shoulder on September 23 as he dove to make a tag at third base. He landed awkwardly and left the game. If Monday goes well for the pitcher, Gausman will likely make the start in the first game against the Padres. If Gausman is not able to go, Matthew Boyd will likely get the start, coming on his regular rest schedule. Shota Imanaga is also an option, as he pitched just 12 pitches in the finale on Sunday. Meanwhile, Clay Holmes and David Peterson are likely to pitch later in the series.

The Padres come in as one of the hottest teams in baseball, but the Cubs have the likely NL MVP on their roster. Game 1 between the two is scheduled for 10 pm ET on Tuesday night in San Diego.
