Alex Bregman is showing that even a serious facial injury won’t keep him off the field for the Chicago Cubs.
Just days after suffering several facial fractures, Bregman hit a two-run home run in the first inning of Sunday’s game against the Boston Red Sox, which is being played in Tampa Bay because of weather.
The Cubs celebrated Bregman’s impressive return on social media with the post, “Well, hello Alex Bregman. 😤”

Bregman then followed that up with a solo blast in the top of the third inning and also added an RBI single in the ninth inning.

Bregman’s big day comes just a week after a foul ball hit him in the face. He was waiting in the on-deck circle during Chicago’s Sept. 20 game against the Cincinnati Reds. Specifically, the ball bounced off teammate Michael Busch's bat after Busch checked his swing.
Bregman left the game immediately and went to a Cincinnati hospital for X-rays and a CT scan. He had several fractures in his left cheek, but he didn’t need surgery. Furthermore, doctors found no concussion, and he passed his vision tests.
The veteran third baseman returned to the Cubs’ lineup on Friday against the Red Sox, just five days after the injury. Although he went 0-for-4 in his first game back, he said afterward his face felt fine. He was focused on returning to his usual routine.
Bregman’s home runs on Sunday marked another big step in his quick recovery. He began the day with 26 home runs and 89 RBIs. This is his first season with Chicago after signing a five-year, $175 million contract. Since the Cubs have already locked up a postseason spot, Bregman’s health will be key heading into the Wild Card Series. For now, he looks determined to keep producing at the plate, facial fractures and all.
