Cristiano Ronaldo has retired from international soccer at the age of 41. After spending 23 years at the top of the industry, Ronaldo has finally decided to hang up his boots after 234 games and 146 goals for Portugal.

A Portuguese soccer legend, Ronaldo was a part of the Portuguese national team for over two decades, where he represented the squad in 6 FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026). Ronaldo's step-down from the national team comes after a disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup performance and a recent suspension and tussle with new manager Jorge Jesus. Recently, on social media, Ronaldo announced his retirement decision and even handed over his iconic number 7 jersey.

Shortly after the decision became public, FIFA President Gianni Infantino also addressed Ronaldo's retirement and shared a touching tribute to him on social media. “Few players have ever touched the heart of football fans around the world quite like [Cristiano Ronaldo],” he wrote.

“A career defined by extraordinary talent, relentless determination and an unwavering desire to push the boundaries of what is possible. As the first player in history to score in six different editions of the FIFA World Cup and the all-time leading goalscorer in men’s international football, Cristiano has achieved milestones that may never be matched but his greatest legacy goes far beyond records, trophies and goals.

“He has inspired generations, united millions of fans and carried the hopes and pride of Portugal onto the world’s greatest stages. Thank you, Cristiano, for the passion, the unforgettable moments and the immense contribution you have made to our beautiful game proudly wearing the “Seleção” shirt. Your international career will forever be part of football’s history,” Infantino finished.

Ronaldo's retirement caused a massive uproar on social media and soon became one of the most trending topics last night. As celebrities and athletes worldwide gathered to honour Ronaldo's legacy, fans grew concerned about Lionel Messi's silence on the former Real Madrid star's decision, especially since Ronaldo had previously paid tribute to Messi upon his retirement.
