Coming into the year, everyone knew that the Dallas Cowboys' defense was not going to be… well, good. After their dismal performance last season, the bar could not have been any lower. While no one was expecting this team to be a top-10 unit after just one offseason, the hope was that they would at least become a passable unit.
That… hasn't happened yet. The Cowboys continue to be the worst defensive team in the league, and Thursday night's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was yet more proof of this claim. Against a rookie backup quarterback, the Cowboys surrendered 24 points, and would have surrendered more if not for Tampa Bay's mishaps in the game. A team that looked absolutely lost before the game was given their first win by this defense.
With that in mind, what will owner Jerry Jones do? Well, the Cowboys owner said that they're going to continue making moves to improve this defense.
“Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he’d still be willing to make another significant move to improve the defensive roster,” Jon Machota reported, adding that Jones said, “This isn’t fold the tents here.”
The Cowboys already made a home-run move this season, trading for Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. That, combined with their moves this offseason (drafting Caleb Downs and trading for Rashan Gary), was done in hopes that the team's defense would improve after being arguably the worst unit in the league last season. That, evidently, hasn't worked: Dallas' defense is still the worst defense in the league through the first five weeks.
Article Continues BelowPorter Jr. did not play against the Buccaneers in Week 5 due to an illness he contracted. That being said, the new Cowboys cornerback likely wouldn't have done anything to significantly help his team. Dallas' run defense, in particular, was gashed multiple times by Bucky Irving.
There are a few weeks left before the NFL's trade deadline lapses. Jones has said that he's willing to make a big move again, but Cowboys fans know this script all too well. Will Jones stay true to his word?
