Conor Benn told by ex-rival he will never fight for world title again in X-rated verdict

Conor Benn 'looked like absolute s***' in his defeat to Ryan Garcia - he will never be a world champion.

That's the view of the 29-year-old's former foe Chris Algieri, who has issued a scathing assessment on the British star's Las Vegas nightmare over the weekend.

Benn failed in his quest to become the WBC welterweight champion after being stopped in the second round at the T-Mobile Arena.

How did Conor Benn lose to Ryan Garcia?

The Destroyer was floored by a straight rand within the opening minute of the second stanza.

It was the first time he had been sent crashing to the canvas since being dropped twice in the opening round of his first meeting with Cedrick Peynaud in December 2017.

While Benn bravely rose to his feet, he was immediately pinned against the ropes, with referee Thomas Taylor jumping in to bring a halt to the contest.

The Londoner has since raised doubts over his immediate future in boxing after being outclassed by his America rival.

And for Algieri, who won the WBO welterweight title in 2014, he has insisted Benn looked awful in Sin City.

Algieri knows first hand of Benn's qualities having been knocked out by him in Liverpool in December 2021, which turned out to be his final fight of his career.

The contest came less than a year before Benn tested positive for clomifene twice in two separate VADA drugs tests.

Slamming Benn's performance against Garcia, Algieri told BoxingScene: "Benn looked absolute s***.

"He looked slow, he looked small, he looked smaller than Ryan - and he outweighed him, apparently, by 20 pounds.

"And they made all this hoopla about the weight going into the fight - he gained 30 pounds.

"He gets in the ring, he looks small, he looks slow and he had zero power. Zero power.

“Benn has shown with this performance, and basically his last performance too – he didn't look good against [Regis] Prograis [in April] either.

"The world-class level, he's just not ready for it, and this opportunity that he got to fight for a world title was way too soon.

"And I don't think he gets another shot again, I don't think he's there, I don't think he ever earned it.”

Algieri continued: "Benn was saved by the referee, Ryan Garcia said [before the fight], ‘I hope this guy gets out of here safe because he doesn't know what he's in for,' - 100 per cent, that was the truth.

"And if Thomas Taylor didn't step in when he did – which I thought was a little early, but Benn did not complain – he was going to end up face down snoring, because he had zero defence once he got hit with that right hand.

"I mean, zero defence all night long, bt once that punch landed, he didn't want to be there.”

Algieri later added: "He's never going to be world champion and this was his only shot.

"He's not going to fight at welterweight anymore, he has no place at 154, 160 [middleweight] I think would be a good move for him."
