The Michigan Wolverines are 3-2 on the season (arguably should be 2-3, but that's a different story) after losing two straight games going into the bye week. The jury is still out on head coach Kyle Whittingham, but many will give him the benefit of the doubt considering this is his first year with the program. Unless your name is Connor Stalions; in that case, you're completely fed up with Whittingham's coaching.
Stalions, who resigned from Michigan over the alleged sign-stealing scandal while Jim Harbaugh was head coach, went on a lengthy rant on X, going over every reason why Whittingham isn't doing a great job this season. Stalions does not believe the 66-year-old has the leadership skills necessary to lead a big program. He blasts Whittingham for bad clock management, poor situational awareness, and predictable game plans.
“Michigan's 3-2,” Stalions said. “Fans are rightfully emotional. The offense isn't moving the ball. QB play needs to be better. The run game needs to be better. All of these things can be true. But at some point, you have to stop blaming the symptoms and identify the root cause. This is college football. You need the talent, but you need the leadership to empower the talent.
“There were 3 current NFL Head Coaches empowering the talent in 2021-23,” Stalions continued. “One is the current Super Bowl champ, with 2 other former Michigan staffers as ST Coordinator and Defensive Run Game Coordinator. Right now, we’re not seeing anything close to that. There’s coaching malpractice on a weekly basis, and it’s in every area. Clock management, lack of situational awareness, and making things extremely easy for the opposing play callers.”
Article Continues BelowConnor Stalions shared several follow-up posts (six to be exact), providing examples of his claims. Whether Stalions is correct or not, it's no secret Michigan needs to make some adjustments moving forward.
Kyle Whittingham will have a chance to right the ship, as the Wolverines have a bye in Week 6. The program will return in Week 7 when Michigan faces off against the Penn State Nittany Lions in The Big House.
