The Washington Commanders on Thursday waived rookie running back Kaytron Allen ahead of their upcoming clash with the New York Giants in Week 5.

Washington selected the former Penn State standout with the 187th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, who entered the NFL following a record-setting college career. However, Allen's opportunities with the Commanders remained limited, with the 23-year-old recording 41 rushing yards on 12 carries across his first four appearances. He also contributed on special teams.

The decision comes amid changes in Washington's running back room, giving head coach Dan Quinn several options to consider. Austin Ekeler recently returned to the roster, while Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Rachaad White have handled major portions of the workload. Chris Rodriguez also remains in the backfield group, while Jeremy McNichols has had his 21-day practice window opened after being designated for a return to action.

McNichols, along with cornerback Trey Amos and defensive end Deatrich Wise, was among the three Commanders players designated to return this week. Allen's departure opens a roster spot as the team works through these personnel decisions.

Despite being a sixth-round selection, Allen had generated interest among Washington supporters after impressing during the summer. His physical running style offered a potential option in short-yardage situations, but the competition for backfield opportunities increased as veteran personnel became available.

Allen's college production provides a clearer picture of his potential. During four seasons with the Nittany Lions from 2022 through 2025, he garnered 4,180 rushing yards on 769 attempts, scoring 39 touchdowns. He also accumulated 70 receptions for 490 yards and four receiving touchdowns. His career rushing total surpassed Evan Royster's previous program record of 3,932 yards, making Allen Penn State's all-time leading rusher.

His finished with 1,303 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns in his final college collegiate season in 2025. He also earned second-team All-America recognition from the AFCA.

The Commanders could attempt to bring Allen back through their practice squad if he clears waivers. However, other NFL teams can claim him and place him directly on their active rosters.
