The Indianapolis Colts are making an immediate change to their defensive communication following a rough Week 1 performance against the Baltimore Ravens.

Indianapolis will hand linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither the responsibility of wearing the helmet transmitter and making the defensive calls when the Colts face the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2, coach Shane Steichen announced Wednesday.

ESPN’s Stephen Holder reported the change via X, formerly known as Twitter.

“NEW: Colts coach Shane Steichen says LB Akeem Davis-Gaither will now wear the helmet transmitter this week and make the defensive calls. The Colts had numerous issues in Week 1 when safety Cam Bynum was struggling to play deep in the secondary and also run the huddle.”

The move comes after the Colts surrendered 41 points in a 41-23 loss to the Ravens on Sunday. Indianapolis struggled to contain Baltimore throughout the matchup, prompting Steichen to adjust how the defense communicates before another difficult test.

Bynum handled the communication duties in Week 1 while also playing deep in the secondary, creating additional responsibilities for the safety. Moving those duties to Davis-Gaither could allow Bynum to focus more on his assignments on the back end.

The Colts will now look for a quick defensive response against the Chiefs.

Indianapolis travels to Kansas City for its Week 2 matchup Sunday at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC.
