Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is facing an off-field hurdle after he was caught possessing marijuana following a traffic stop, adding to an already difficult period in his career.

According to a report from ESPN's Stephen Holder, Richardson, in his affidavit, admitted to smoking marijuana in his vehicle to avoid doing it at home. He was cited for an expired registration and handed a summons for possessing marijuana. The incident happened in Carmel, Indiana on October 12.

The 24-year-old Richardson has not played yet this season, but Colts coach Shane Steichen denied that the latest controversy would further impact it.

“No, it does not. It does not at all. I've had private conversations with Anthony, and I'll keep those private,” said Steichen, as quoted by The Athletic's James Boyd.

Richardson, the No. 4 pick in 2023, has been relegated to a backup signal-caller since last season. The Colts declined the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, making him a free agent next year.

He issued a trade request in February after losing his starting spot. Steichen spoke highly of Richardson during training camp, praising his focus, development, and growth.

In a statement, the Colts said they are privately dealing with Richardson's misdemeanor charge.

“We are aware of the situation involving Anthony Richardson and are currently gathering additional information. We will have no further comment at this time,” stated the team.

The Colts are trying to get back on track as they are struggling with a 2-5 record, including a three-game losing skid. They will face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
