Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has already seen enough from Cal sophomore quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele to make an eye-catching comparison ahead of Friday night's ACC matchup in Berkeley.
“This is a dude, now,” said Swinney. “If you want to know what an NFL quarterback looks like playing college ball, that's this kid. He is an elite passer, he can make every throw from every angle, every area on the field.”

Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 225 pounds, Sagapolutele enters the showdown with the Tigers fresh off his best statistical showing of the young season against Wagner. He completed 27 of 33 attempts for a career-high 413 yards and three touchdowns during the Golden Bears' 49-7 win. Cal finished with 626 yards and did not punt for the first time since Nov. 4, 2017, against Oregon State.
That performance gave Sagapolutele's numbers a shot in the arm through three games. He now ranks fourth in the ACC with 288.7 passing yards per game, sixth with a 66.7% completion rate and eighth with a 151.7 passer rating. His seven touchdown passes are tied for third in the conference. Pro Football Focus has also given him the fifth-highest grade among ACC quarterbacks through three games.

The numbers are a big step forward from his first two outings. Before facing the Seahawks, Sagapolutele ranked 12th in the ACC in passer rating at 123.0 and passing yards per game at 226.5, while his completion percentage stood at 60%.
The Golden Bears enter Friday's game at 2-1 overall and 1-0 in ACC play. Cal opened the season with a 45-24 loss to UCLA before defeating Syracuse 21-18 and Wagner 49-7. Their rushing attack remains a concern, however, averaging only 3.4 yards per attempt and ranking last in the ACC.
Clemson is also 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference after taking down North Carolina 28-20. Tigers quarterback Tait Reynolds completed 20 of 29 passes for 215 yards, one touchdown and one interception in his first career start.
Friday's game will be Clemson's first ACC road contest of the season, with kickoff scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Tigers and Golden Bears have met only once previously, with Cal winning 37-13 in the 1992 Citrus Bowl.
