Dolphins linebacker Chop Robinson is not complaining about the controversial penalty he got for roughing Patrick Mahomes on Sunday, but he is wondering what he could have done differently.

Asked what he could have done to avoid the roughing penalty, which the officials said was for landing on Mahomes with his body weight, Robinson said he doesn’t know.

“I’m honestly not too sure, but either way, that’s what they called, so that’s what we got to play on. Next play,” Robinson said.

Robinson put his hands down to break his own fall on top of Mahomes, but he said he’ll try to do that earlier in the process of falling to the ground next time.

“Just put my hands out earlier, but it’s a football play. That’s what the refs called, so I had to move on from it,” Robinson said. “That’s what I could do better on that play, but that’s what they called, and that’s what it is.”

Asked about practicing hitting quarterbacks without landing on them, Robinson said that’s a hard thing to do because defensive players don’t hit quarterbacks in practice.

“I don’t know, that’s a hard question. When you can’t really work it, you can’t hit a quarterback in practice. But I did what I was taught and told to do, and that’s what they called, so that’s what it is,” Robinson said.

The penalty was very costly for the Dolphins, as it came after Mahomes had thrown an incompletion in his own end zone on third down. If not for the penalty, the Chiefs would have punted from deep in their own territory, and the Dolphins would have taken over in good field position while trailing 14-10 in the third quarter. Instead, the 15-yard penalty and automatic first down kept alive a Chiefs drive that ended up lasting 13 plays, covering 80 yards, and ending with a field goal that gave the Chiefs a 17-10 lead in the fourth quarter.

“Of course we wanted to keep them in the end zone, but again, that’s what they called. There’s nothing I could do about it, just play the next play, and just try to stop them, get the ball back to the offense,” Robinson said.

The penalty was one of the biggest plays of the game, and one that Robinson isn’t sure how he could have avoided.
