Rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen barely saw the field in his NFL regular-season debut, but the Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff still maintains massive plans for the explosive playmaker. Despite generating plenty of buzz throughout training camp, Allen logged just one offensive snap during Kansas City’s 31-10 Week 1 victory over the Denver Broncos.

Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy addressed the rookie’s limited workload mid-week, preaching patience while reassuring fans that the Louisiana product remains a core piece of the long-term puzzle for superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“We’re gonna continue bringing him along and making sure we’re bringing him along the right way,” Bieniemy told KCSportsNetwork. “He’s gonna be a part of our success moving forward. I can guarantee you that.”

Bieniemy’s bold promise comes at an intriguing time for Kansas City’s wide receiver room. While the Chiefs rolled to a comfortable victory over Denver, the downfield passing attack proved surprisingly quiet out of the gate. Starting receivers Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Tyquan Thornton absorbed the lion's share of playing time, logging 83%, 77%, and 68% of the offensive snaps, respectively, yet the trio combined for a meager five receptions for 37 yards. Rice salvaged the group's night by breaking a tackle for a 13-yard touchdown, but Mahomes spent much of the game probing tight coverage without a dynamic option pulling defenders away.

That is precisely where Allen enters the picture. The rookie impressed coaches in August with his sharp route-running and ability to beat man coverage. Head coach Andy Reid and Bieniemy historically ease rookie receivers into their complex system rather than forcing heavy volume early on. However, with Kansas City needing more suddenness on the outside, Allen’s wait on the bench will not last long. Expect Bieniemy to start expanding his role and dialing up targets for the young weapon very soon.
