Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics were firing on all cylinders against the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night, and head coach Joe Mazzulla had nothing but praise for his star forward’s shot selection.

Tatum poured in 34 points in Boston’s 119-80 blowout win at Spectrum Center, and Mazzulla liked everything he saw.

“I thought every shot he took was a great shot,” Mazzulla said, via Mack Baltes.

It is hard to argue with that assessment. Tatum was efficient from start to finish, shooting 9-of-16 from the field, 5-of-8 from deep and a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line. He also stuffed the stat sheet with eight rebounds and nine assists, finishing a team-best plus-36 in the rout.

Tatum was not the only one getting it done. The Celtics racked up 33 assists and knocked down 24 3-pointers on 54.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Mazzulla credited both the passers and the shooters for the ball movement.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s twofold, right? You can’t have an assist unless the shot goes in. So, I like the fact that we shared it,” Mazzulla said, via Steve Reed of The Associated Press.

Boston set the tone early, racing out to a 40-20 lead after the first quarter and leading by as many as 46 points. The Celtics never trailed in the game.

Derrick White added 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-6 from deep, while Payton Pritchard chipped in 12 points and five assists. Boston’s bench also outscored Charlotte’s 49-47, with Luka Garza and Mitchell Robinson each grabbing seven rebounds.

Charlotte, meanwhile, struggled mightily, shooting just 29.3% from the field and 22% from 3-point range. Naz Reid scored 14 points for the Hornets in the loss.

The performance was another encouraging sign for Tatum, who returned from a torn Achilles tendon on March 6 of last season. He sat out Boston’s win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday for rest but looked fully refreshed against Charlotte.

The win improved the Celtics to 7-2 on the season, while the Hornets fell to 3-7. Boston has now won seven of its last eight games, with the lone loss coming against the Houston Rockets.

Tatum and the Celtics will look to keep rolling when they visit the Bucks on Sunday.
