California’s hopes of bouncing back from its 39-31 loss to UNLV have suffered a significant setback. The Golden Bears are dealing with several injury concerns ahead of their matchup against Virginia Tech, with star quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and two other key players facing uncertain availability.
NFL insider Pete Thamel reported that Sagapolutele and standout defensive back Kingston Lopa remain questionable for Cal, while running back Adam Mohammed is listed as doubtful for the upcoming game.
“Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and star defensive back Kingston Lopa remain questionable for Cal. RB Adam Mohammed is doubtful,” Thamel wrote.
Sagapolutele’s availability is one of Cal’s biggest concerns heading into the Virginia Tech matchup. The quarterback suffered a head injury during the first half of the Golden Bears’ loss to UNLV and did not return after halftime.
Sagapolutele was reportedly medically cleared during the game. However, head coach Tosh Lupoi decided to keep him on the sidelines as a precaution.
The quarterback has been an important part of Cal’s offense this season, throwing for 1,180 yards and eight touchdowns through the first five games. If he cannot play against Virginia Tech, the Golden Bears could turn to backup Jackson Brousseau, who performed well after replacing him against UNLV.

Virginia Tech enters the upcoming matchup against California with a 4-1 record. Meanwhile, the Golden Bears are looking to improve their 2-3 mark, and uncertainty surrounding several key players presents another challenge.
In addition to Sagapolutele, Lopa, and Mohammed, California running back Carter Vargas and defensive lineman Nate Burrell have been ruled out for the upcoming game. Inside linebacker Kamar Mothudi is also listed as questionable alongside Sagapolutele and Lopa.
