Chicago Bears history is defined by terrible quarterback play, with Sid Luckman — who started his career in the 1930s — still being considered as the greatest QB in franchise history. Luckman had a great run, but he’s not going to hold that title for long. Caleb Williams is the QB that Bears fans have been waiting generations for, and he’s off to a fast start to begin in third pro season in a Week 1 matchup against the Carolina Panthers.

Williams scored the first Bears touchdown of the season on a speedy scramble into the end zone. The Bears scored another touchdown on a one-yard run by D’Andre Swift. After forcing a Carolina punt, Chicago got the ball back, and it only took two plays for them to get back into the end zone again.

After a 22-yard check-down to running back Kyle Monangai to start the drive, Williams dropped back to pass and fired an absolute dime to tight end Cole Kmet for a 22-yard touchdown strike. The Panthers had Kmet blanketed, but Williams put the ball right on the money where only his receiver could catch it. It’s hard to throw a football better than this. What a throw. This easily could have been an interception if he was overthrown or under-thrown at all. Instead, it’s six more points for the Bears.

The Bears offense looks fantastic. It going to be need to be, because the Chicago defense could be among the worst in the league this year.

The Bears have always had great defenses and bad offenses. The script is flipped this year. Ben Johnson said he wanted his offense to break the NFL’s all-time scoring record coming into the season, and it looks like the Bears might have the talent to do it. Williams is going to be primed for a monster season, and he’ll have all the motivation he needs to put up points with a leaky defense behind him.
