Todd Bowles finally had a reason to celebrate Thursday night. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach, though, took an unexpected hit in the process. Tampa Bay snapped its winless start to the 2026 NFL season with a gritty 24-16 road victory over the Dallas Cowboys. However, television cameras caught Bowles doubled over in discomfort late in the fourth quarter. The sight of the veteran coach dropping to one knee on the sideline immediately raised concerns about his health. Fortunately, the explanation was far less serious than it initially appeared.
ESPN’s Jenna Laine reported that Bowles had been accidentally struck in the stomach by a helmet during a celebratory sideline moment following a crucial defensive takeaway.
I’m told that Todd Bowles is OK. Several of you asked. I was concerned as well. I’m not in Dallas but just heard back. He said he caught a celebration helmet to the gut but says he’ll be OK. That’s why he was crouched over like this. pic.twitter.com/cDwSSsAETj

The Buccaneers now have an extended break before hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 6. That gives their coach time to recover from the bruising moment.
Tampa Bay’s opening month was a difficult one. The Buccaneers stumbled to an 0-4 start amid offensive inconsistencies, defensive struggles, and a right-thumb injury that sidelined Baker Mayfield in Week 3. With Mayfield unavailable, backup Jalon Daniels helped guide the offense against Dallas. Meanwhile, Bucky Irving erupted for 165 rushing yards. Three defensive takeaways also proved decisive in Week 5. The win lifted Tampa Bay to 1-4 and eased some of the pressure surrounding Bowles.
