Playoff heartbreak has once again befallen the Philadelphia Phillies. On Thursday, they fell to the Atlanta Braves, 6-2, to lose Game 3 of the Wild Card series — marking the end of their 2026 campaign. They were already losing steam towards the end of October, requiring a win in Game 162 to seal their spot in the postseason, and this marks yet another premature end to what was such a promising season.
It's now been five straight years that the Phillies fell short of their ultimate goal of competing for a World Series title, and they seem to be getting worse year after year. After losing in the World Series in 2022 and choking in the NLCS in 2023, the Phillies at least made it to the NLDS in 2024 and 2025 after winning the division. They didn't even manage to do that this year.
For Phillies slugger Bryce Harper, he thinks that major changes could be in order to rekindle this team's fire and to re-ignite their World Series hopes for 2027 and beyond.
“Each year is so different than the year before. I don't really put stock into years before or what happened or anything else. You know, this was a brand new team. Obviously, we had the guys that are part of that core group that we are. I'd imagine this team would look a lot different next year with the guys that are kind of leaving this clubhouse. So we'll see,” Harper said, via NBC Sports Philadelphia.

The Phillies' core veterans do have a ton left in the tank, so it behooves their front office to at least make some changes around them. Adding more defense-oriented players might be the key, and improving their pitching depth is going to be crucial for next season.
The Phillies did go 79-55 after they fired Rob Thomson and deployed Don Mattingly as their interim manager. So perhaps a full season with a motivated and healthy team with Mattingly at the helm would do this team a world of good. They simply need not overreact to yet another devastating postseason elimination.
