The Denver Broncos stunned the Kansas City Chiefs with a massive fourth-quarter comeback to get a 28-24 win in Week 8. Down 11 in the final frame, the Broncos scored 15 unanswered points, then held a goal-line stand to knock off the Chiefs and claim the lead in the AFC West.
Two rookie running backs — Emmett Johnson for the Chiefs and Jonah Coleman for the Broncos — emerged as the game's surprise offensive stars as they led their respective teams in receiving and scored crucial touchdowns.
As it turns out, the Broncos were well aware of the Chiefs rookie's talent. Per Broncos beat reporter Zach Stevens, Broncos head coach Sean Payton admitted that the team had “loved” Johnson during the draft process. However, they ultimately decided to draft Coleman in the fourth round, while Johnson fell to the Chiefs in the fifth.
Johnson, who had been used sparingly by the Chiefs this season, had a breakout game with 128 receiving yards on five catches. That included a massive 73-yard touchdown catch. He also added one carry for 15 yards.
Article Continues BelowMeanwhile, Coleman had 11 carries for 41 yards and a touchdown, which turned out to be the game-winning score. He also added a team-high 63 yards on four catches. Coleman has played just three games thus far after returning from IR stint due to an ankle injury. In those three games, he has contributed 134 rushing yards and two touchdowns, with 97 receiving yards.
It's much too early to tell whether the Broncos made the right move taking Coleman over Johnson. Johnson has hardly had any playing time to showcase his talents, while Coleman is just coming back from injury. But Coleman is contributing already to a Broncos team that has now won four games in a row. And with RJ Harvey landing on short-term IR, they will need the rookie to continue his solid play.
