The Denver Broncos are looking ahead after their disappointing Week 1 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, with head coach Sean Payton refusing to place the blame solely on offensive coordinator Davis Webb.

Webb made his regular-season debut as Denver's offensive coordinator and play-caller in the 31-10 defeat. The Broncos managed only 176 net yards and 10 points, leading to criticism of Webb's play-calling after the offense failed to get going throughout the game.

However, Payton defended his young coordinator when asked about his performance following Thursday's practice. Rather than singling out Webb, Payton said the poor showing involved virtually everyone in the organization, including himself.

“Listen, that game didn't go [well] for any of us as we would have hoped, right?” said Payton. “I said in the meeting this morning, there was dirt on a ton of people's hands, starting with me. So you learn from that. It's a quick turnaround.”

Quarterback Bo Nix also backed Webb after the loss, saying the offense produced a “pretty pitiful” performance and that Webb had put together a good plan that the players failed to execute.

Nix stumbled in his own season opener, completing an outing that included just 131 passing yards, one interception and three fumbles, with one of those fumbles lost.

The page turns quickly for Denver, with the Jacksonville Jaguars awaiting Sunday in Week 2. The Jaguars allowed 272 net yards to the Cleveland Browns in Week 1, giving the Broncos an opportunity to improve on their 176-yard offensive performance in Week 1.
