Both clubs have endured frustrating starts to the campaign and head into the weekend sitting in the bottom half of the table, making Friday's meeting an important opportunity for either side to claim a much-needed victory before the lengthy international break.

It was a very different picture for Bristol City just a week ago, with the Robins having put together three victories in the space of seven days to move up to fourth in the Championship standings.

The Italian enjoyed an encouraging beginning to his tenure, guiding Watford to consecutive wins, including an impressive opening-day success against promotion hopefuls Southampton. They then followed that up with draws against Wrexham and West Ham.

Taking five points from those opening three fixtures, all against sides expected to challenge near the top of the division, represented an encouraging start for the Hertfordshire club. Since then, however, their form has taken a sharp turn, with three defeats coming in their last four games.

Watford's away record makes for particularly concerning reading, with their most recent victory on the road in any competition coming at Ashton Gate in February. That remains their only away win of 2026, while they have subsequently suffered seven defeats in their last nine matches away from home.

The Hornets have also struggled badly for goals on their travels this season, finding the net just once across their three away matches so far.

A home defeat to Stoke last weekend left Watford down in 17th place in the Championship table. However, the standings remain extremely tight, with only three points separating them from the play-off places and four points keeping them clear of the relegation zone.

That makes Friday night's encounter an important one for both sides, with City looking to rediscover their momentum and Watford desperate to halt their recent slide before the international break.

Bristol City will be desperate to get back to winning ways after securing their third consecutive win to climb into fourth in the Championship table only just over a week ago.

Watford head to Asthon Gate with just one win in seven and three defeats in their last four, and more worryingly with only one win away from home in the entirety of 2026 so far.

The Swiss striker, signed in the summer from Plymouth, is the Robins' leading goal scorer this season having bagged away from home against Southampton last weekend, and in Skubala's side's most recent home win against Portsmouth at the end of last month.

Watford striker Iker Bravo has received more yellow cards than any other player on either team so far this season after picking up his third of the campaign in last weekend's 2-1 defeat at home against Stoke.
