The San Diego Padres were one strike away from evening their NLDS series with the Milwaukee Brewers. The Padres had their star closer, Mason Miller, on the mound with the lead, but with the bases loaded. At the plate, Jackson Chourio looked to be a hero. Chourio took a 2-2 fastball to center field, scoring Sal Frelick and Christian Yelich and winning the game for the Brewers.
While a memorable moment, it was also historic. Chourio joined an exclusive list with his game-winning hit, according to MLB Network.
“Jackson Chourio is the 5th player in Postseason history to record a walk-off hit when down to his team’s last strike, joining: Oscar Gonzalez – '22 ALDS G3, Brett Phillips – '20 World Series G4, Ivan Rodriguez – '03 NLDS G3, Kirk Gibson – '88 World Series G1,” the post from MLB Network on X read.
While an impressive list, the game-winning hit does not guarantee future success. Oscar Gonzalez won Game 3 of the ALDS in 2022 for the Cleveland Guardians. The win gave Cleveland a 2-1 series lead over the New York Yankees, but the Yankees would win the final two games of the series, eliminating the Guardians. Brett Phillips' hit came in Game 4 of the 2020 World Series for the Tampa Bay Rays. That hit would tie the series with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the Dodgers would win both Game 5 and Game 6 to win the title.
Article Continues BelowThe Ivan Rodriguez hit was slightly different. Unlike the Chourio hit, which came in the bottom of the ninth, the Rodriguez hit came in the bottom of the 11th for the Florida Marlins. The Marlins had given up a run to the San Francisco Giants in the top of the 11th, but then Rodriguez drove in two in the bottom half of the inning. In Game 4 of the series, Rodriguez was at the plate when J.T. Snow was rounding third and heading home for the Giants in an attempt to tie the game. Snow barrelled into Rodriguez at home, but Pudge held onto the ball, eliminating the Giants and making it two straight games that Rodriguez had sealed the contest. The Marlins would go on to win the World Series that year.
The most famous hit when down to the last strike is that of Kirk Gibson. He hit a two-run home run for the Dodgers that won them Game 1 of the 1988 World Series over the Oakland Athletics. The Dodgers would go on to win the World Series in five games.
The Brewers will look to close out the Padres on Tuesday night in San Diego.
