It is still too early in the Premier League season to draw hard and fast conclusions, but the early signs suggest Chelsea will be one of the division’s entertaining outfits.

Their four games up to now have contained no fewer than 19 goals, easily the most in the league.

With a front three of Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Morgan Rogers, Chelsea have the attacking quality to cause any team in Europe problems.

On the flip side, their defence is prone to cracking under pressure. All five of their top-flight opponents in 2025/26 - Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion, Arsenal, Leeds United (in the EFL Cup) and Hull City - have scored at least twice against them.

That is a worry for Xabi Alonso, whose side will surely be unable to have a successful season unless they tighten up at the back. You cannot bank on winning every game 3-2 or 4-3.

For now at least, Chelsea fans are enjoying the ride. Having slumped to a 10th-place finish last term, the Blues are not expected to win the league in their first season under Alonso’s stewardship.

There has been some talk of a potential title tilt, but that feels premature given how much ground Chelsea have to make up. 

Being out of Europe is a boost to their Premier League prospects, but Arsenal and Manchester City remain the two strongest sides in the division for the time being.

Brentford narrowly missed out on Europe last season and they will hope to be in the mix again in 2026/27.

The Bees have made a solid start to the campaign, winning one and drawing three of their first four games. 

Of course, Keith Andrews will want to see his team start to turn some of those draws into victories, but their unbeaten record shows they will not be easy to beat on Friday.

Nevertheless, we fancy Chelsea to edge this one with their firepower in the final third. They will have to dig in at times, but the Blues should have just about too much for their west London rivals.

This fixture marks the beginning of the Premier League weekend and it could end up being the most entertaining encounter of matchday one.

As mentioned above, Chelsea’s matches are averaging 4.75 goals per 90 minutes this season, while there have been no clean sheets in games involving Xabi Alonso’s team.

Goals at both ends feels like a shoo-in at the Gtech Community Stadium, not least because Brentford are also yet to draw a blank this term.

In terms of the total number of goals, we should see at least three in this west London derby.

Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Morgan Rogers are enjoying playing together in the early weeks of the campaign.

Palmer and Rogers have played in the same side before this season, and it has not taken too long for Pedro to join them on the same wavelength.

No one in the Chelsea squad has scored more goals than Rogers so far in the Premier League, but the former Aston Villa man is only the seventh-favourite in the anytime goalscorer market.
