While the Bruins are currently sitting pretty as one of college football's lone undefeated teams, there's one aspect of their storybook run that has UCLA football fans worried: Bob Chesney's future with the program.
One of the bigger free agent coaching signings of the last cycle, Chesney has definitively proved that the magic he brought to Holy Cross and James Madison has absolutely translated to the Big Ten, and as a result, other high-profile programs, maybe even another one that calls Los Angeles home, could come calling if they move on from their coach early next year.
Asked to send a message to worried fans about his future with the program, Chesney all but shut down the possibility of leaving any time soon, as UCLA has allowed him to go all in on building a “big-time college football program” in Westwood.
“No message to them, but this is, I said it before, this is the greatest place in the world to play football. I think it's the greatest place in the world to coach football. I think I'm extremely blessed to be here. My family loves it here. I love it here. I mean, it's almost November, look at us out here,” Chesney said.
“So I truly love it. And again, the vision that I have for this place as an outsider looking in is all things that is being met with that same energy, a plan of moving forward. An idea of chasing greatness and not being afraid to consider this big-time college football and then to start building the program that way. So very excited about our future and how.”
In the current landscape of college football, if a player, coordinator, or coach performs well above expectations, the sharks will begin to circle, looking to broker a deal. And yet, UCLA is in the Big Ten, has a massive stadium, and has already proven they can recruit top-tier talent when they are firing on all cylinders on the field. If Chesney wants to stay, he should have all the tools to build a legacy all his own in a city desperate for another college football juggernaut.
