The Big 12 keeps having officiating mistakes. In the BYU win over Arizona State, another officiating mistake occurred, and the Big 12 conference was forced to admit another misstep.
Now, the conference is doing a deeper look into its officiating, per Jon Wilner of KSL News.
βPer source close to the Big 12: Executive meeting this week w anyone involved in officiating (on-field, replay booth, command center, etc). Entire operation will be evaluated. Conference has had issues with application of the rules/officiating mechanics 3 weeks in a row,β Wilner posted on X, formerly Twitter.
The first mistake came in the October 17 game between BYU and Notre Dame. Notre Dame was driving late in the fourth quarter, down four against BYU. A pass from CJ Carr fell incomplete, ending the game. Still, there should have been a second left on the clock, which would have allowed Notre Dame another chance for the game-winning touchdown.
Then, on October 24, with UCF hosting, BYU officials enforced a ten-second run off at the end of regulation. The runoff was incorrectly applied, and UCF should have had a chance to win the game in regulation. The Knights would go on to win the game in overtime.
Article Continues BelowThis past week, BYU faced off against Arizona State. In the first quarter on a second-and-goal play from the one-yard line, Bear Bachmeier attempted to stretch into the end zone, but fumbled before crossing the goal line. The ball was recovered at the two-yard line by Sione Moa, who advanced the ball into the end zone for a touchdown. The ball should not have been allowed to be advanced, though, and the ball should have been awarded to BYU for a third-down attempt.
While mistakes happen in officiating, three weeks in a row is something that needs to be reviewed.
