Sunday’s Week 9 matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals (5-2) and the Atlanta Falcons (3-5) comes with an unusual backdrop, as the teams meet at Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid for a 9:30 a.m. ET kickoff. The Bengals have won three in a row and sit in second place in the AFC North, a half-game behind the Steelers. The Falcons have won just three games and are two games under .500 but in the NFC South that is good enough to also be within a half-game of first.
The Bengals arrive in Spain after surviving one of the wildest games last weekend, a 43-36 overtime win over the Tennessee Titans that required Cincinnati to erase multiple deficits. Tennessee jumped ahead 13-0, led 21-13 in the third quarter and was still up 29-23 during the fourth, but Joe Burrow repeatedly brought the Bengals back. He connected with Mike Gesicki for a 25-yard touchdown and later found Tee Higgins for an 18-yard score with 1:17 remaining to force overtime at 36-36. Burrow then finished the comeback himself, scrambling nine yards for the game-winning touchdown in overtime. He has been the driving force behind Cincinnati’s three-game winning streak, which also includes road victories over Miami and Baltimore. He has the Bengals’ offense averaging a stout 29.4 points per game.
An inconsistent offense has plagued Atlanta all season and last Sunday was no exception. Yes, their game against Tampa was played in torrential and constant rain, but the Bucs weathered the storm and won 16-0. Atlanta was held to 224 total yards, committed four turnovers and possessed the ball for only 24:44 as Tampa Bay controlled the game on the ground. Heck, Baker Mayfield attempted just three passes…and did not complete a one. Michael Penix Jr. endured a particularly rough afternoon, throwing a career-high four interceptions, while the Falcons managed just 125 net passing yards and 99 rushing yards. Tampa Bay pounded Atlanta for 324 rushing yards, including 170 and a touchdown from Bucky Irving and another 140 from Kenny Gainwell.
The recent history favors the Bengals, who lead the all-time series 10-5 and have won the last three meetings. The latest came in October 2022, when Burrow carved Atlanta apart for 481 passing yards and three touchdowns in a 35-17 Cincinnati victory.
Let’s dive further into the numbers and see if we can’t find an additional sweat or two.

Here are the best bets our model is projecting for Sunday’s game between the Bengals and the Falcons:
- Moneyline: NBC Sports is staying away from a play on the Moneyline.
- Spread: NBC Sports is recommending a play on the Bengals -3.0.
- Total: NBC Sports is leaning towards a play on the Game Total OVER 52.5.
Here’s why the Bengals -3.0 is the best bet:
Cincinnati ranks 2nd in offensive DVOA (23.8%), 1st in passing yards (315.86 per game), 1st in passing touchdowns (2.86 per game), 1st in receptions (27.86 per game), 1st in completion percentage (73.03%), 1st in third-down conversion rate (52.87%), 2nd in points scored (29.43 per game), and 4th in touchdown percentage (5.54%). Joe Burrow has thrown 20 touchdown passes — the most in the league — and he just put five of them on Tennessee in a 43-36 overtime win. Atlanta is the opposite. The Falcons rank 24th in offensive DVOA (-10.8%), 27th in passing yards (212.62 per game), 21st in passing touchdowns (1.25 per game), 30th in receptions (17.0 per game), 27th in completion percentage (60.44%), 29th in third-down conversion rate (33.68%), and 31st in interceptions thrown (11). They’re scoring 21.38 points per game (23rd) and they just got shut out 16-0 by Tampa Bay. The defensive side is where this gets ugly for the Falcons. Atlanta ranks 26th in interceptions (3), 29th in interception rate defense (1.04%), 27th in plays allowed (65.5 per game), 28th in pass attempts allowed (36.12 per game), and 26th in receptions allowed (23.25 per game). That’s a secondary that can’t take the ball away and can’t get off the field — exactly the profile Burrow shreds.
