The Chicago Bears had an unfortunate turn of events after star quarterback Caleb Williams suffered a non-contact hamstring injury. Though he had every reason to focus on his own injury after the Bears' 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, the quarterback made sure his teammates stayed focused on what comes next.
Williams left in the fourth quarter after suffering an injury while scrambling toward the pylon from Minnesota's 6-yard line. He was later seen addressing the Bears in the locker room, where rookie tight end Colston Loveland said Williams kept the message about the team's response rather than his own health.
âÂÂLet it hurt, let it sting, watch the tape, clean it up, get back and be 1-0 next week,â Williams told the team, according to Loveland.
The Bears had little going right before Williams left. After scoring 59 points against the Carolina Panthers in Week 1, Chicago managed only three points against Minnesota. The Bears also committed two turnovers and struggled to handle the Vikings' pressure in wet conditions.
Williams completed 15 of 26 passes for 138 yards and an interception before leaving the game. Tyson Bagent took over, but Chicago could not finish the drive after Minnesota blocked Cairo Santos' 23-yard field-goal attempt.
Loveland finished with one catch for three yards on three targets and pointed to the turnovers and penalties as major reasons for the loss.
âÂÂJust a sloppy day,â Loveland said. âÂÂPenalties, turnovers. We knew coming in, whoever wins the turnover margin is probably gonna win this game, and we didn't do that. So just a lot of things we got to clean up, but [Tyson Bagent] fought and gave a lot of effort, which is good to see.âÂÂ
Williams is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday. The results will determine how Chicago approaches its Week 3 game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football, and whether Bagent could be asked to start.
