The Yordan Alvarez American League Most Valuable Player hype just keeps on getting bigger.
Alvarez added to that again on Thursday, when he hit another home run, his 40th of the 2026 MLB season, during a matchup against the Kansas City Royals at Daikin Park in Houston.
With two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the fifth inning, Alvarez took Kansas City starter Seth Lugo's first offering, a 90 mph fastball, deep for a 385-foot home run, extending Houston's lead to 4-1. Houston ultimately won the game to the tune of a 6-2 score.

The 29-year-old Alvarez finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored, zero walks and no strikeouts, as the Astros won the three-game series and, more importantly, improved their record to 77-76 â just half a game ahead of everyone else in the American League West Division standings.
With his home run, Alvarez became just hte first Astros player to have at least that many dingers in a season since Alex Bregman hit 41 in the 2019 MLB campaign. He is also now closer to tying the franchise record of 47, set in 2000.
The Astros have nine more games left to play in the regular season, including the start of a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves at Daikin Park on Friday. It will be interesting to see if Alvarez will be able to at least tie Bagwell's record, though, he doesn't really need it to highlight the incredible season he is having at the plate.
On the season, Alvarez is batting .311/.429/.598 with 99 RBIs on top of all of those home runs.
