The New York Knicks have struggled to regain their championship form early in the 2026-27 NBA season, prompting franchise legend Amar'e Stoudemire to warn the defending champions about the distractions that come with winning a title.
With the Knicks (2-3) preparing for Friday night's NBA Cup rematch against the Philadelphia 76ers (4-1), Stoudemire emphasized the importance of shifting their attention away from the celebrations and opportunities that followed their historic championship.
In a recent interview with DJ Siddiqi of Covers.com, Stoudemire explained how New York's off-court spotlight can affect a championship team's focus.
“When you win a championship, especially in New York, you have all these different opportunities off the court that take place. You're filming commercials, you're having these different shows, you're doing these different things. All these events are happening.
“You’ve got to try to narrow it back down and lock in on basketball because playing in New York, you can get a little bit taken away from the sport with all the activities that go along with being in New York City. But you have to now try to narrow it down back to basketball. Key in, lock in on basketball. Make it the main priority and build out from there.”
New York entered the season with considerable expectations after capturing its first NBA championship in 53 years. However, the Knicks opened their title defense with three consecutive losses, including an opening-night defeat to Philadelphia during their championship ring ceremony.
The 76ers, led by LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, spoiled New York's celebration and handed the defending champions an early setback.
Amar'e Stoudemire remains confident in Knicks despite slow start

Despite those struggles, Stoudemire acknowledged that the Knicks deserved to enjoy their historic accomplishment throughout the offseason.
“That's normal. That's a part of human nature, man. You win a championship for the New York Knicks. You kidding me? After 53 years, you gotta enjoy that. You will never be the first one to win it after 53 years ever again.
“So that energy, you have to capitalize on it. It's just a matter of now being able to kind of channel that and now focus on basketball and lock in a little bit more.”
Although New York's championship defense began with three losses, the team has responded with consecutive victories.
The Knicks secured their second win Wednesday night, defeating the Chicago Bulls 133-127 to improve to 2-3 heading into Friday's matchup.

“I'm not concerned. When you are the champions, man, every target is at your back. Every team's gunning for you, so it's tough to kind of get off to a great start the following year. I'm not concerned. I think it's a matter of just kind of locking in and focusing a little bit more, and they'll be okay.”
The Knicks now have an opportunity to avenge their opening-night loss against a Philadelphia team that has started the season with four wins in five games.
Friday's NBA Cup matchup at Xfinity Mobile Arena tips off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Prime Video.
For New York, the contest presents another early test of whether the defending champions can maintain their momentum and follow Stoudemire's advice by making basketball their primary focus.
