Over the last year alone, fans lost Goldberg, AJ Styles, and John Cena to retirement, and now, 51-year-old WWE legend Rey Mysterio may be joining them in 2027.
WrestleVotes on Fightful Select reports that there's been “chatter backstage” at WWE about Mysterio possibly retiring in 2027. In turn, the promotion has started laying out plans for his farewell.
While he is still a top in-ring performer, it's not surprising that the 51-year-old Mysterio is planning on hanging up the boots and mask soon. He has been wrestling for decades, and he has accomplished everything he can in WWE.
Who will retire WWE legend Rey Mysterio?

WWE is likely planning the perfect final opponent for Mysterio. Gunther would be a great option, considering he was on a tear of retiring legends over the last couple of years. Retiring Mysterio could get him back on track after a year full of feuding with the likes of Danhausen.
However, the best option is his son, Dominik Mysterio. Like Gunther, Mysterio has been on a skid over the last year. Retiring his father would give him much-needed legitimacy.
Article Continues BelowThe father-son duo has squared off several times previously. Their most notable encounter was at WrestleMania 39, which the elder Mysterio won. They would not have another televised singles match until the July 1, 2024, edition of Monday Night RAW, which Rey Mysterio also won.
They have not had another singles match since. The last time that they shared the ring was the Oct. 5, 2026, edition of RAW. Judgment Day's Dominik Mysterio and JD McDonagh defeated the LWO's Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee.
In addition to his work in WWE, Mysterio is the general manager of Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. He introduced the idea of the AAA tournament to determine Roman Reigns' challenger for the Mexico City episode of RAW in September 2026.
