Initial word on 49ers tight end Jake TongesâÂÂs knee injury was that it would keep him out for an extended period of time and head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an update on where things stand at a Wednesday press conference.
Shanahan said that Tonges needs surgery to repair an injury to his MCL and will miss the rest of the season as a result. Tonges saw action on eight snaps against the Rams before suffering the injury.
George Kittle and Luke Farrell are the only other tight ends on the 53-man roster at the moment, but the team will likely make a move to remedy that because â as previously reported â wide receiver DeâÂÂZhaun Stribling will be joining Tonges on injured reserve.
Stribling injured his ankle against the Rams and Shanahan said Wednesday that he will miss around 10 weeks after having surgery. The 49ers have signed KhaDarel Hodge off of the practice squad to add depth at wideout.
