Archie Gray tipped for Premier League transfer to avoid ‘ruining career’ at Tottenham

Archie Gray has been told he is ruining his career at Tottenham.

The 20-year-old has been one of the few players at Spurs this season to come out with any credit.

Their dire campaign sees them face the very real possibility of relegation to the Championship as they sit above West Ham in 18th by just a single point.

It would be the first time they have played in the second tier of English football since the 1977/78 season.

Gray has played 31 games in all competitions this season and established himself as a fan favourite.

His versatility has been a valuable asset for Spurs over their two troubled seasons since his £30m move from Leeds.

In his first season, Gray played 53 per cent of his minutes as a centre-back and 21 per cent as a right-back in all competitions.

This season has seen him play in his preferred midfield role more often than not, but has also filled in at left-back and right-back.

If Tottenham are to stay in the Premier League this season, then Gray is likely to play a vital role.

Gray’s performance in the 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest was the one hope to cling on to.

“He’s playing continually in the right way, in a good way,” said Spurs boss Igor Tudor after the game.

“It’s a mix of quality, physically and mentally, to always make the right choices, be humble, and have the legs to do so.”

Is Gray too good for Spurs?

Gray’s role at Tottenham was a point of discussion on talkSPORT’s Inside Spurs YouTube show.

talkSPORT’s Sonny Snelling said: “If I was five years old and I wanted a Spurs shirt, do I want any of them on the back? No. Maybe Archie Gray.

“I just feel like he could go back to Leeds or something. Or look for pastures new.

“He shouldn’t be here. He’s ruining his own career. I feel guilty that we’re part of that.”

Gray for Tottenham captain?

The 20-year-old has also been previously tipped as a future Tottenham captain.

This is amid frustrations with current club captain Cristian Romero, whom many fans want to see stripped of this title.

talkSPORT’s Abbi Summers said: “It’s amazing to me how you can have a centre-back for Argentina who is world-class level and you have a defender at Tottenham Hotspur who is so bang average.

“So bang average but has the ability to sit there and think he’s better than the football club. I really don’t like Romero. I really don’t.

“I think he’s a terrible club captain. One of the worst captains we’ve had.”
