Andy Reid’s Chiefs assistant off hook by NFL after domestic violence charges dismissed

Before this year’s NFL Draft, Kansas City Chiefs coach Dave Merritt was arrested. Domestic violence charges were later dismissed. And now he is off the NFL hook as well, according to a post on X by Mike Garafolo.

“The NFL concluded its investigation of #Chiefs DBs coach Dave Merritt and found insufficient evidence of a violation of the personal conduct policy, sources say. A Kansas district court dismissed misdemeanor DV charges last month. No discipline from the league as well.”

It’s a good situation for the Chiefs, as Merritt is considered one of the top defensive back coaches in the league. Merritt has been with the Chiefs since 2019, and has helped teams — including the Giants — win five Super Bowls.

Chiefs have a new look in the secondary

Merritt will have a different bunch to work with in the 2026 season. Jaylen Watson and Trent McDuffie are with the Rams. Bryan Cook left for the Bengals. And the Chiefs drafted Mansoor Delane with the No. 6 overall pick in this year’s draft.

Nohl Williams figures to have a bigger role at the cornerback position. But he said the standout players from 2025 will be missed, according to a post on YouTube by the Chiefs.

“Obviously, it’s sad to see them go, but they went to another great team,” said Williams. “And it gives me an opportunity to step up. Try to fill their shoes. And the whole room, really… the whole room’s got to step up. Because those are two good guys,” said Williams.

“(Those guys showed me) just how to watch film. How to play the scheme here, (and) how to work. How to practice, and how to be a pro. You just got to be intentional to the details.”

Williams, a third-round pick in 2025, said he believes he made strides last year.

“I saw a lot of growth in my play,” Williams said. “I got more confident in myself. Just gotta keep preparing.”
