Alexander Isak warned he may not be same again after leg break as Liverpool tipped to re-enter race for £65m star

Alexander Isak might not play again this season.

That’s the view of talkSPORT’s Gabby Agbonlahor after the Swede suffered a suspected broken leg in Liverpool’s 2-1 win at Tottenham.

Isak went down in pain under a challenge from Spurs defender Micky van de Ven while opening the scoring for the Reds on Saturday night.

talkSPORT understands the £125million British-record signing is set for several months on the sidelines.

Season over?

However, Agbonlahor believes Isak’s first season at Anfield could already be over due to the magnitude of the injury.

“I don’t think he [Isak] plays again this season,” the former Aston Villa striker said.

“I just looked at the injury, and I’ve seen that happen before, where his leg got tangled. That’s a broken leg that is.

“That’s a long time out, that is – You don’t always come back the same either.”

Isak has endured a troublesome first season on Merseyside following his deadline day move from Newcastle.

A limited pre-season brought about by the striker’s decision to go on strike to force through a move to Anfield ultimately scuppered his hopes of making an immediate impact in his new surroundings.

Multiple injury layoffs have not helped his bid for continuity and Isak’s new setback leaves the reigning Premier League champions in disarray.

The Reds are already without Mohamed Salah who is on AFCON duty with Egypt meaning pressure will be on summer signing Hugo Ekitike to provide the goals over the festive period and beyond.

Back in for Bournemouth ace

Isak’s injury could see boss Arne Slot choose to dip in the transfer marker for an attacking reinforcement in a bid to continue Liverpool’s recent upturn in form.

And Agbonlahor believes Liverpool could re-enter the race to sign Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo.

The in-form Ghanaian was linked with a move to Anfield earlier in the season however, Manchester United have since entered into the race while Manchester City appear to be the frontrunners for his signature.

“I think now Liverpool might join the race for Semenyo,” Agbonlahor said.

“There’s talk about Man United, Man City. I don’t know why he’d go to Manchester United. ridiculous take.

“If I’m him, I’m saying, why even message me?”

Semenyo, who has netted eight goals in 17 games this season, has a £65m release clause in his contract that can be activated during next month’s transfer window leaving clubs on high alert.

Salah’s Liverpool future

talkSPORT understands that Mo Salah is expected to stay at Liverpool beyond the January transfer window.

Sources close to Salah believe Isak’s injury means the Premier League champions are extremely unlikely to sanction an exit in the January transfer window.

Salah has a mega money offer to move to the Saudi Pro League that will stay on the table next summer.

Liverpool’s win at Tottenham was their third in a row in all competitions and will be hopeful of breaking into the top four over the festive period.

The Reds sit fifth in the table, one point adrift of fourth-place Chelsea with matches against Wolves, Leeds and Fulham to come over the next fortnight.
