Alan is doing okay, and is due to be back on talkSPORT next Wednesday.

Shebahn Aherne will be alongside Ray Parlour on Friday’s Breakfast Show from 6am until 10am.

The show will be co-hosted by Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist on Monday and Tuesday as usual.

We wish Alan a speedy recovery.

Later in the show, Shanahan and Agbonlahor were joined by former Premier League star Vinnie Jones.

The ex-Chelsea, Leeds and Wimbledon midfielder moved into acting at the end of his playing days and is famed for his appearance in the legendary British movie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

How does Jones view football now compared to his era?

Jones was known for his no-nonsense style on the pitch and was asked how he views football in its current climate compared to his playing days.

Pressed on whether football was more entertaining back then, Jones joked: “I thought there were a few more tackles flying about (back then)!”

He then went on to talk about the influence physios now have in player welfare.

“The physio’s rule the roost and say they [players] can come off.

He even wound up on WWE’s programming during the company’s UK Tour

“I remember playing at QPR and I went into a tackle with a player and we both sort of threw elbows at each other.

“I felt my head and I was pouring with blood.

“Suddenly, I ran off to the physio, five stitches and got back on.

“It’s a different world.”

Who does Jones view as football’s hard men?

But Jones does not subscribe to the notion that he was the quintessential hardman of British football.

Jones was sent off no fewer than 12 times during his career and that was at a time when referees took a far more lenient outlook on tackles.

The ex-Leeds man used Billy Bremner as an example of a football hard man while also giving a nod to former rival Eric Cantona who famously jumped into the crowd to assault a Crystal Palace fan in a fixture in 1995.

“What’s hysterical is I got back home and look at some of the old Leeds games with Billy Bremner.

“I came in (to Leeds) off the back of that (era). I was the last Mohican and put a few tackles about.

“I was a bit unruly compared to what we are now. You look at some of my reels but look at Eric Cantona’s.

“He was absolutely fantastic, that was entertainment.

“I’m not sure it’s so much entertainment now. If a physio told me I had to go off, I would have knocked him spark out!

“No way would a physio tell me to get off.”
