76ers’ Joel Embiid turns in vintage performance in Game 5 win over Celtics

They aren’t done yet! The Philadelphia 76ers came into TD Garden with their backs against the wall. Down 3-1 against the second-seeded Boston Celtics, Philly needed to pull out all the stops to get another game back in Wells Fargo Center. In their time of need, star center Joel Embiid came through with a vintage performance.

Just a few days removed from his return from injury, Embiid had one of his best games in the 76ers jersey in Game 5. The star center regained his MVP form for a game, displaying the signature footwork and scoring that made him one of the best players in the league. This shimmy late in the game was reminiscent of his early days in the league.

Embiid finished the game with a monster statline: He had 33 points on 12-of-23 shooting, eight assists, four rebounds, and one block to lead the 76ers to a convincing 113-97 win in Game 5. Tyrese Maxey had 25 points on 10-18 shooting from the field and filled the stat sheet, adding 10 rebounds, five assists, two steals, and a block.

76ers coach Nick Nurse talked a little bit about how Embiid got his form back, per Ky Carlin.

“It was a little similar to the other night that obviously he was getting some good looks, and a lot of them were just going in and out…I was sitting there thinking, he’s not far away here from finding some rhythm.”

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown had 24 and 22 points, respectively, but the 76ers made them work hard for their points. Both players shot below 50% from the field and were hounded all game long by the Philly defense. Their efforts on that end led to a win and kept Philly in the hunt.

Game 6 will be played in Philadelphia on Thursday.
