49ers sign ex-Jets, Dolphins safety

After being eliminated in the Divisional Round, the San Francisco 49ers have been re-tooling their roster to go on a much deeper playoff run. Their latest addition saw the 49ers bring in a former Miami Dolphins and New York Jets standout.

San Francisco has signed safety Ashtyn Davis to a one-year contract, via Adam Schefter of ESPN. While the financial terms of his deal has not yet been revealed, the 49ers waived running back Jemar Jefferson to make room on the roster.

Davis originally joined the league as a third-round pick by the Jets back in 2020. He spent five years with the franchise, appearing in 69 games with 22 of those being starts. Davis put up 175 tackles, 15 passes defended and eight interceptions.

Entering the 2025 season, the safety joined the Dolphins on a $3 million contract. He managed to record 65 tackles, four passes defended and an interception. Davis’ Pro Football Focus grade didn’t look pretty, as his 51.1 mark ranked 87/98 safeties. Perhaps that is why he had to wait so long in free agency to sign.

Still, the 49ers clearly see potential in the safety. With Ji’Ayir Brown and Malik Mustapha in place, Davis won’t be expected to start. But he can at least serve as a veteran rotational piece behind them. His past knack for turnovers could come in handy in San Francisco.

But Davis must first prove himself. On a one-year deal, his future isn’t guaranteed with the 49ers. In training camp, he must show he can be a seamless fit on defense. If so, Davis will have an opportunity to contribute on a team with real Super Bowl ambitions.
