3 Bears in danger of getting cut after 2026 minicamp

Head coach Ben Johnson got off to a strong start with the Chicago Bears, leading the franchise to their first NFC North title since 2018. Johnson and the Bears will now enter the 2026 season trying to prove they aren’t a fluke and that they’ll be contenders for the foreseeable future.

Before they begin that journey though, Chicago must cut down on their roster. It is clear who are the leaders on offense and defense and what the majority of the roster will look like. Still, the Bears will have some crucial decisions to make around the edges.

How those cuts play out will be telling of Johnson’s vision of the franchise. For all the success they had in year one, the head coach knows their roster is still a work in progress. Whoever remains clearly fits what Johnson is trying to build.

Training camp will give the franchise a much better idea of where they stand and what needs to be added. It’ll also show the Bears who won’t be entering their 2026 journey with them.

Roschon Johnson – Running Back

The pairing of D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai – with the help of an improved offensive line – proved to be an effective duo for the Bears. During the 2025 season, Chicago ranked third in rushing offense, averaging 144.5 yards per game.

Both should once again lead the team’s ground game. Behind them, the Bears have players like Salvon Ahmed and Brittain Brown.

That leaves Roschon Johnson in a precarious position. He played in just seven games during the 2025 season, rushing twice for 17 scoreless yards before being placed on injured reserve.

Johnson has shown plenty of potential in the past, with 352 rushing yards as a rookie and six touchdowns as a sophomore. But if he doesn’t prove himself during training camp, he won’t find a role in Chicago’s offense.

Kiran Amegadjie – Offensive Tackle

The Bears have once again found themselves in a precarious position at left tackle. While Ozzy Trapilo looked like the long-term answer, he is now questionable for all of 2026 due to a ruptured patellar tendon.

As it stands, the Bears have numerous options of potential left tackles. Braxton Jones, Theo Benedet and Jedrick Willis Jr are set to battle it out for the starting role. But like Johnson being flushed out of the running back room, there may not be a spot for Kiran Amegadjie in 2026.

A former third-round pick, the Bears have always believed in Amegadjie’s potential. However, he missed the entire 2025 season due to an elbow injury. Still, he was buried on the depth chart as is.

Amegadjie will have an opportunity to battle with the previous listed tackles and could work his way back into Chicago’s good graces. But it looks like his time has run out with the Bears.

James Lynch – Defensive Tackle

The Bears signed Lynch to a one-year contract during the offseason. So it’s at least clear Chicago’s decision makers see something in the defensive tackle. Still, he’s facing an uphill battle to make the final roster.

Grady Jarrett and Gervon Dexter remain the starters up the middle. Behind them are free agents Neville Gallimore and Kentavius Street. The Bears also used a seventh-round pick on Jordan van den Berg and have former second-rounder Shemar Turner returning from injury. There simply may be too many cooks for Lynch to remain in the kitchen.

He does come to Chicago with five years of NFL experience, appearing in 71 games. That includes 17 games with the Tennessee Titans in 2025, including a start. However, Lynch’s 53.0 grade from Pro Football Focus ranked 87/134 defensive linemen.

The Bears’ weakness is their defense, so there is sure to still be plenty of moving pieces. It wouldn’t be shocking if one of them was Lynch getting cut though.
