$2bn MLB ballpark ahead of schedule as franchise reveals relocation plans for 2027 season

The Athletics have been handed a positive update on the construction of their new ballpark.

Ground broke on their new $2bn stadium in June 2025, with construction beginning before the official ceremony.

The stadium, designed by Schrock KC Architecture, had been consistently given a target to be ready by 2028 Opening Day.

Bob Nightingale of USA Today has confirmed that the new ballpark is ‘ahead of schedule’ per its construction timeline.

But despite the positive update, he did confirm that the team ‘still plans to remain at the Triple-A ballpark in Sacramento until after the 2027 season.’

Construction is moving quicker than expected, but the franchise will honor the deal they signed with the city of Sacramento and play one-more year there.

Since leaving the Oakland Coliseum at the conclusion of the 2024 campaign, The A’s have been playing their home games at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento.

The minor league stadium plays host to The Athletics and the Sacramento River Cars, who are the Triple-A affiliate for the San Francisco Giants.

The ballpark underwent major renovations for the inbound-MLB franchise, including improved video displays, audio enhancements and technology to maintain the grass.

It’s widely considered a hitter friendly park, beneficial to the young core of A’s hitters, headlined by 2025 American League Rookie of the Year Nick Kurtz.

Despite the fact they are heading towards another season in a minor league stadium, it is an exciting time to be an A’s fan.

The Athletics are spending money. They are locking up their young stars and they have a plethora of talent waiting in the minor leagues.

If they must endure an extra-season in the minor leagues, it should be worth it, given what’s waiting for them when they reach Vegas.

Athletics aiming to set new standard of baseball hospitality

The Coliseum was iconic, but, they do say that everything is bigger and better in Las Vegas, and their new ballpark is aiming to set a brand new standard for baseball hospitality.

In March, the Athletics announced two brand-new exclusive areas for their new stadium.

Partnered with restaurateur Will Guidara and Aramark Sports + Entertainment, and all new ‘Athletic Club’ is set to re-define the baseball viewing experience.

It will include a private restaurant, and supper club with a multi-course, table-service menu, as well as an upscale lounge featuring small plates, craft beer, curated wines and premium cocktails.

Each game will be serviced by maître d’s, sommeliers and dining concierges.

The A’s also announced the Diamond Club, an all-inclusive social space for premium ticket members located adjacent to the Athletic club.

It’s aiming to be a one-of-a-kind viewing experience for fans, and with the date now confirmed, fans can begin to plan to embrace it fully in 2028.
