2026 Sony Open: Nick Taylor looking to do something we haven’t seen in over a decade

The PGA Tour is back and will officially begin on Thursday at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Having golf back on a weekly basis (basically) from here on out is fantastic and very welcome news.

It feels like forever ago given that it was at the beginning of last year, but Nick Taylor won the 2025 version of the Sony Open and he is therefore looking to do something that the PGA Tour hasn’t seen in over a decade. Should he go on to win the event this year, he defeated Nico Echavarria in a playoff last year, he would be the first repeat winner of the Sony Open since Jimmy Walker in 2015.

Obviously it is hard to win a golf tournament in general, but winning this one will require taking down a number of high-level players. 20 of the otp 50 players in the Official World Golf ranking are in the field. Notables include Russell Henley, J.J. Spaun, Robert MacIntyre, Ben Griffin, Keegan Bradley, Hideki Matsuyama, and Collin Morikawa. Again… winning is hardly guaranteed!

Something notable about the Sony Open is that it is the first opportunity of the seaosn for players to earn FedExCup points toward the Aon Swing 5 and potential entry into the next two Signature Events in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational.
